Human beings have an interesting tendency, we often value what is difficult to obtain and overlook what is always available. When something comes to us effortlessly or consistently, we slowly begin to treat it as ordinary. Gratitude fades, appreciation reduces, and what was once a blessing starts feeling like an entitlement.
This is especially true in the relationship between a husband and wife.
In the early years of marriage, every small gesture feels special. A thoughtful conversation, waiting for each other before dinner, preparing a favourite meal, or a simple phone call during the day carries immense value. But as years go by, these gestures become routine. Instead of appreciating them, we begin to start taking things for granted.
The reality is that both husband and wife silently carry responsibilities that often go unnoticed.
A wife may spend countless hours managing the home, caring for children, looking after elderly parents, planning every little detail of the family’s well-being, and ensuring everyone around her is comfortable. Much of this effort happens behind the scenes and is rarely acknowledged.
At the same time, a husband often shoulders the responsibility of providing financial security. Every day, he steps out to earn, faces workplace pressures, deals with uncertainties, and puts in his blood and sweat so that his family can live comfortably. As responsibilities grow, with children’s education, ageing parents, home loans, medical expenses, and future planning, the weight on his shoulders increases significantly. Yet, many of these struggles remain invisible because he quietly continues doing what he believes is his duty.
Neither role is easy. The challenge begins when both partners become so accustomed to each other’s contributions that they stop noticing them altogether.
Sometimes, the best way to rediscover the value of what we have is to step back and observe the world around us. There are people longing for a caring life partner. Some wish they had someone to share responsibilities with. Others are navigating marriages where respect, trust, or emotional support are missing.
When we look beyond our own lives, we realise that many things we consider “normal” are, in fact, extraordinary blessings.
A spouse who stands beside you during difficult times, supports your dreams, shares responsibilities, and genuinely wants the best for your family is not something everyone is fortunate enough to have.
Appreciation doesn’t require expensive gifts or grand celebrations. It lives in small moments. A heartfelt “thank you” for preparing a meal, acknowledging a long day at work, recognising the effort behind managing the household, appreciating someone for handling the children’s needs, or simply saying, “I know how much you do for us.”
These words may seem small, but they make a person feel seen, respected, and valued.
Strong marriages are not built on perfect people. They are built on two imperfect individuals who never stop appreciating each other’s efforts. The moment gratitude becomes a daily habit, expectations become lighter, respect grows deeper, and love finds new strength.
Perhaps today is a good day to pause and ask yourself a simple question: Am I appreciating what my spouse does every day, or have I simply started expecting it?
The people who make our lives easier often do so quietly. Let’s not wait until their absence teaches us their value. A sincere “thank you,” genuine appreciation, and the conscious decision to never take each other for granted may be the simplest and most powerful gifts we can offer the person who walks beside us through life’s journey.
Beautifully described human psychology in marriage. We take every little thing for granted, but a small word of appreciation can work wonders.`
