There were so many things which had to happen right for me to be where I am today. Not everything can be planned.
I heard this thought recently, and it stayed with me long after the conversation ended. The more I reflected on it, the more it filled me with gratitude not just for the big milestones in life, but for the countless small events, decisions, coincidences, and people that quietly contributed to my journey.
We often like to believe that our success, happiness, or current situation is entirely the result of our planning and hard work. While effort certainly matters, life has a way of reminding us that we are not the sole architects of our destiny.
Think about it for a moment.
The school you attended, the teachers who encouraged you, the friends who influenced you, the opportunities that appeared unexpectedly, the setbacks that redirected you, the strangers who helped you, the books that found their way into your hands, the timing of certain events, and even the mistakes you made, all of these played a role in shaping your path.
Could any of us have planned every one of these factors?
Probably not.
When we look back at life through the rearview mirror, the dots seem connected. At the time, however, many of those moments felt random, inconvenient, or even painful. Yet, years later, we often realize that what appeared to be a detour was actually leading us to a destination we could not have imagined.
Many of us have experienced situations where a rejection led to a better opportunity. A failed plan opened a new door. A chance meeting introduced us to a lifelong friend or mentor. A difficult phase taught lessons that no success ever could.
Life unfolds in ways that are often beyond our understanding.
This realization does not diminish the importance of planning. Planning gives us direction. It helps us make informed decisions and move towards our goals. But there is a difference between planning our future and assuming we can control every aspect of it.
The truth is that life is a partnership between effort and uncertainty.
We do our part by working hard, learning continuously, and making the best decisions possible with the information we have. The rest is influenced by factors far beyond our control timing, circumstances, people, luck, and sometimes pure chance.
Recognizing this creates a profound sense of humility.
It reminds us that while we should be proud of our achievements, we should also be thankful for the invisible support systems that helped us reach them. It encourages us to appreciate the privileges we often overlook and acknowledge the contributions of others who played a role in our journey.
Most importantly, it teaches us gratitude.
Gratitude for parents who sacrificed for us. Gratitude for mentors who believed in us. Gratitude for friends who stood beside us during difficult times. Gratitude for boss who didn’t promote me :). Gratitude even for challenges that made us stronger and wiser.
As we move forward in life, it is easy to focus only on the next goal, the next milestone, the next achievement. But every now and then, it is worth pausing and looking back.
When we do, we realize that our story is not just a collection of carefully executed plans. It is also a collection of unexpected blessings, fortunate turns, valuable lessons, and countless moments that had to align perfectly for us to be where we are today.
And perhaps that realization is one of the greatest reasons to remain grateful and not just for what we have achieved, but for everything that quietly helped us get here.
