There was a time when Joseph H. Vanlalhruaia wasn’t chasing world titles—he was simply trying to survive.
Hailing from Mizoram, Joseph’s early life was marked by hardship. He fell into drug addiction, a battle that derailed his future and left him working as a daily wage labourer to make ends meet. With little hope and even fewer opportunities, his life had reached rock bottom.

But the turning point came when he decided he wanted a different future. Joseph walked away from addiction and turned to Muay Thai, the combat sport known as the “Art of Eight Limbs.” Recovery wasn’t instant. It demanded discipline, relentless training and the courage to rebuild his life one day at a time.

Years of perseverance transformed him from a struggling labourer into one of India’s finest Muay Thai athletes. In 2024, Joseph scripted history by becoming the first Indian to win the World Muay Thai Organization (WMO) World Championship title—an achievement that placed India on the global Muay Thai map.

His success didn’t end there. Competing in Thailand, the birthplace of Muay Thai, Joseph defeated a fighter from Vietnam who had previously competed in ONE Championship, proving that his world title was no fluke. Victories against experienced international opponents established him as one of India’s most accomplished Muay Thai fighters.

Yet, Joseph’s greatest achievement may not be the championship belt around his waist. Having experienced the destructive grip of addiction firsthand, he now dedicates himself to mentoring young athletes and encouraging them to choose sport over substance abuse. Through coaching and community work, he hopes others will avoid the mistakes he once made.

By overcoming overwhelming personal hardships he rebuilt his life to achieve global sporting success and earned nickname “Cinderella Man”

He is a reminder that failure does not define a person. Addiction, poverty and setbacks can change the course of life—but so can one brave decision. His journey from daily wage labourer and drug addiction to world champion proves that the strongest victories are often won long before stepping into the ring.
