THINKING POSITIVE

It was one of my students’ birthdays. I had called his mother in the morning to wish him. Like my daughter, who always wishes her close friends either early in the morning or at midnight (the previous day) on their birthdays, I thought, let me be the first to congratulate him. He admired me a lot, as I have been the only one who, he says, understands him.

His mother picked up on the seventh beep and answered the call with tears in her eyes, sobbing with words choking her throat. I was confused for a moment, yet the wiser part of me asked, “It’s Sam’s birthday today, ma’am. Could I please wish him?”
“He left for school, ma’am. Just two minutes back.”
“Is everything okay, ma’am?” I asked hesitatingly.

“Sam’s father needs a bypass surgery. The doctors say there is a fifty-fifty chance. He is only 40 years old. And Sam will write his tenth board this February,” she said all in one go, as if that vent-out was so necessary.

It shocked me. Only a month ago, I had spoken to the gentleman. He looked fit and fine. I paused, took a deep breath, and continued measuring my words.

“I understand your situation, as I had also experienced the same with my father. But, ma’am, why are you crying over the negative fifty percent? Why aren’t you considering the positive fifty percent?”I waited for some response. And then, when I could hear her breath over the phone, I said

“Do you know that being positive brings hope and confidence, and also helps us in making correct decisions? If you stay calm, positive, patient, and have faith in God and yourself, miracles will happen. Haven’t you heard about the placebo effect?”.“I understand it’s one of your testing times. But please think positively. And act with confidence and composure.

Being patient helps us solve many challenging situations. Besides, your confidence will strengthen your husband’s will and drive away his fear. It will raise his heartbeat. Moreover, Sam will be able to study and take the exam. “And when you are positive, the positive vibration spreads and brings in miraculous results.”

I noticed that she had stopped crying and was listening to me. So, I paused for a while.
“Will my husband be cured and healed, ma’am?”
“Definitely, ma’am. I have conviction in God and full faith in you. As women, we are very strong. We can do wonders. Haven’t you birthed your two children? And we all know that sometimes, pregnancy comes with challenging situations and worse outcomes. I hope you understand what I mean, ma’am.”

“So just think, had you pondered over the negative effects of pregnancy, would you have had Sam now? You knew you would deliver your baby well. And so you did. Isn’t it? There are so many other examples.” “Hmm. But…” “There’s no but, ma’am. Just concentrate on the positive fifty percent.” “Okay, ma’am. I shall do as you said. Just pray for my husband, ma’am.”

“I have been praying for him under my breath as we have been conversing. Remember, it’s easy to think negatively because our brain has been wired thus for many years. But you have to rewire it into positive thinking to get positive results. And yes, please remember, whatever we think, we manifest. So why not manifest something positive?”

“Thank you, ma’am.”
“May God bless you all, ma’am. Sir will definitely be cured. I have full faith in you and God.”

A month later, she called me. She was happy. “Thank you, ma’am, for that advice that day. My husband is fine now. Just the post-surgery inconveniences. You came as a messenger of God.”

“It’s God who does everything, ma’am. So please thank Him.”
“I would like to invite you for lunch next week, ma’am. Please come. Sam will be very happy. And yes, it is on Sunday. So, there is no school. You can come easily.”, she urged. “Okay, ma’am. I’ll come.”
