They had been here before. Twice, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty had reached the China Masters final, and twice, the title slipped away. On September 6, 2026, in Shenzhen, they returned for one more chance. This time, they refused to let it go.
Facing China’s He Ji Ting and Ren Xiang Yu, the Indian pair lost the opening game 11-21. But instead of allowing the final to slip away again, they changed gears. They won the second game 21-13.
Then came the decider. With the Chinese pair pushing hard on home soil, Satwik and Chirag held their nerve, fought through the pressure and closed it out 21-17.
After 1 hour and 10 minutes, India had its champions. And history had been made. Satwik and Chirag became the first Indian men’s doubles pair to win the China Masters, a BWF Super 750 tournament. It was also their fourth Super 750 title.
Two Players. One Partnership. Their story began long before this final. Satwik, from Andhra Pradesh, and Chirag, from Mumbai, came from very different backgrounds.
They first began playing together internationally in 2016, and the partnership wasn’t perfect in the beginning. Both liked playing from the back of the court. There were language differences. There were disagreements. There were injuries and periods when people questioned whether the partnership should continue. But they stayed.
They learnt how to communicate, how to complement each other’s game and, more importantly, how to trust each other. Over the years, they became India’s first men’s doubles pair to reach World No. 1, won Asian Games gold at Hangzhou, and established themselves among the world’s elite.
Yet some dreams remained unfinished. An Olympic medal continued to elude them. And perhaps that is part of what keeps this partnership hungry.
They Kept Coming Back The China Masters victory wasn’t just about winning a final.
It was about returning after disappointment. It was about losing the first game and refusing to lose the match. It was about having already lost two finals here, and still believing that the third could be different.
This season alone, they have shown that resilience repeatedly. They won the Singapore Open Super 750, then came to China and fought through another demanding week before finally lifting the trophy they had chased for years.
Perhaps that is what makes Satwik and Chirag special. Not that they never lose. But that they keep finding a way back. Two players from different cities. Two personalities that had to learn each other. One partnership built over a decade. And now, finally China is theirs.
