For nearly two decades, whenever the Indian women’s hockey team stood firm against the world’s best, one name was almost always guarding the goal : Savita Punia.
In 2026, India’s legendary goalkeeper was conferred the Padma Shri, the country’s fourth highest civilian honour, by President Droupadi Murmu, recognising a career built on resilience, consistency and extraordinary leadership.
Born on 11 July 1990 in Jodhkan village of Sirsa district, Haryana, Savita grew up in a farming family. Hockey was not a common career choice for girls in her village, but encouraged by her grandfather, she began playing the sport at the age of 11. Choosing to become a goalkeeper, a position that demands courage more than glory, she trained relentlessly despite limited facilities and gradually rose through the ranks.
Savita made her senior international debut in 2008 and soon became India’s first-choice goalkeeper. Her quick reflexes, calm temperament and ability to deliver under pressure earned her the nickname “The Wall of Indian Hockey.” In 2020, she was named captain of the Indian women’s hockey team, leading a young squad through one of the most successful phases in its history.
Her defining campaign came at the Tokyo Olympics, where India reached the women’s hockey semi-finals for the first time ever and narrowly missed a medal with a historic fourth-place finish. Savita’s stunning saves against higher-ranked teams became one of the biggest reasons behind India’s remarkable run and inspired a new generation of girls to take up the sport.
Under her leadership, India also won the FIH Women’s Nations Cup in 2022, secured important victories on the international circuit and consistently challenged the world’s top teams. Over the years, Savita has represented India in more than 300 international matches, including the Olympics, World Cups, Asian Games, Commonwealth Games and Asian Champions Trophy.
Her brilliance has been recognised globally. Savita has won the FIH Goalkeeper of the Year award three times—in 2021, 2022 and 2024—besides receiving the Arjuna Award in 2018. The Padma Shri is the latest addition to a career that has redefined excellence in Indian women’s hockey.
For years, Savita Punia quietly stood between the goalposts, absorbing relentless pressure while giving India the confidence to dream bigger. She may not have scored the goals, but she prevented countless others. The Padma Shri is a fitting tribute to the woman who stood like a wall when the nation needed her the most.
