When Dr. Raman Kishor was a young boy in Bihar, he watched his mother silently endure cancer. She hid her illness because the family couldn’t afford treatment. By the time she was diagnosed, it was too late. She passed away while waiting for medical care—a loss that changed his life forever.
Instead of letting grief consume him, Dr. Kishor turned it into a lifelong mission: no one should lose a loved one simply because quality healthcare is beyond their reach.
Born into a financially struggling farming family in Bahuarwa village of Bihar’s Darbhanga district, his path to becoming a doctor was anything but easy. With no financial support, he moved to Patna, earned a living by giving private tuitions, and funded his own education. His perseverance eventually took him to AIIMS Patna, where he completed his MBBS and later earned an MD in Community and Family Medicine.
Most doctors spend weekends resting after a demanding week. Dr. Raman Kishor spends his driving through rural Bihar.
Known today as the “Gaon Ka Doctor”, he dedicates every weekend—and nearly 70 to 80 percent of his salary—to providing completely free healthcare in remote villages. Without accepting donations, he personally bears the cost of medicines, blood sugar tests, consultations and travel expenses.
Over the years, he has travelled to more than 250 villages, organised hundreds of free medical camps, and treated over 40,000 underprivileged patients, many of whom had never consulted a qualified doctor before. His camps also focus on spreading awareness about preventive healthcare, early diagnosis and healthy living, helping communities avoid illnesses before they become life-threatening.
His extraordinary service has earned admiration across the country. Dr. Kishor was invited to Kaun Banega Crorepati, where Amitabh Bachchan applauded his commitment to rural healthcare. His work has also been widely recognised through national media coverage, inspiring countless people with the belief that compassion can transform lives.
For Dr. Raman Kishor, medicine is not just a profession—it is a promise he made to his mother years ago. Every village he visits, every patient he treats, and every life he touches is his way of keeping that promise alive. In a world where healthcare often comes with a price tag, he has shown that the most powerful medicine is a doctor who refuses to let poverty decide who deserves to live.
