As the world celebrated the 12th International Day of Yoga on June 21, 2026, one image stood out among thousands of celebrations held across the globe. Deep underwater, Indian Navy personnel aboard INS Satvahana performed yoga asanas in scuba gear, demonstrating extraordinary breath control, concentration and physical discipline.

The unique session was conducted as part of the run-up to International Day of Yoga 2026. Around 40 submariners participated in the underwater yoga demonstration, showcasing how an ancient Indian practice can adapt even to one of the most demanding environments on Earth. The exercise highlighted not only physical fitness, but also mental resilience and operational preparedness—qualities essential for life beneath the sea.

The session was conducted by in-house Naval Yoga practitioners and led by Lieutenant Commander Aarush Sharma. The underwater setting added an extra layer of complexity, requiring participants to maintain focus and coordination while submerged.

The Indian Navy has increasingly incorporated yoga and wellness initiatives into its training ecosystem, viewing them as tools to improve physical endurance, mental agility and operational readiness among personnel deployed in challenging maritime environments.

This year’s International Day of Yoga carried the theme “Yoga for Healthy Ageing” emphasizing yoga’s role in promoting physical health, emotional well-being and lifelong resilience. The celebrations extended to nearly 2,500 locations worldwide, with more than 210 Indian missions and diplomatic posts taking part, reflecting yoga’s remarkable global reach.

The underwater yoga session at INS Satvahana is therefore much more than a novel demonstration. It symbolizes a profound truth: yoga is not confined to studios, mountains or meditation halls. It belongs equally in classrooms, hospitals, sports arenas, scientific institutions and even beneath the ocean.

From the caves of the Himalayas to the depths of the sea, yoga has travelled across centuries without losing its essence. It is one of India’s oldest traditions, yet one of its most relevant gifts to the modern world—a timeless practice that continues to unite strength with serenity, discipline with mindfulness, and India with the world.
