The young generation that we are seeing today is very different than the world has ever seen. They seem to be fast and grasp things absolutely quick. They are great with gadgets and easily adapt to technology. These are kids of today; and these kids are 10x of us!

You agree, isn’t it? But why am I writing about it and why should it be important for us? Well, you are about to find out …….

We as a parent have certain characteristics, qualities, strengths, weaknesses, habits, conduct, language, emotions, and behaviors. Whether we like it or not, our kids are watching us and they learn. Until they are mid school age, until about eight-ten year olds, parents are their biggest influencers. It does not take a Eureka moment to realize that kids are thinking that whatever parents are doing is right. Hence the onus is on us!

Can you relate to these thoughts/ behaviours –

• I lose my temper very easily
• Sometimes I need to lie to handle the situation
• My mobile is very dear to me. I can’t stay without it
• Emotionally I am very vulnerable
• If someone doesn’t appreciate me, I feel low
• What people think of me is very important
• I don’t care a damn about what is happening with others
• Money is more important than people
• Some of my habits are to be kept a secret from my family
• I can take control of any situation by raising my voice
• Weak people must be exploited to rise up
• If the situation demands, it is okay to physically hurt someone
• There are things, which I just not capable of doing
• Whatever people say, women can never be as good as men

Imagine these now –

• I will put in my best efforts irrespective of the result
• Anger will be my slave
• Morning exercise has to be a routine
• Fellow people deserve respect because they too are humans
• Money should not determine the way I treat someone
• I will stay emotionally balanced even in toughest of times
• Whenever available, I will pickup leadership responsibilities
• Discipline is a habit
• Any words that come out of my mouth shall be sweet
• Competition brings out the best in me
• I love being ambitious about positive things
• Reading is a daily ritual for me
• Meditating regularly helps me stay focussed

Can you feel the difference in the two sets?

The kids can feel it too – whether we like it or not. They have this strange ability to understand things even though we don’t speak out. Sometimes when Arpita and Me have a tiff (ofcourse not infront of the kids), my daughter Aavya comes and asks me – Papa, why are you not talking to Mumma?

Parenting is not just about giving them food, clothing, shelter and money. It is about giving them the right attitudes and behaviours.

It is an unsaid reality of modern world – whatever we are as parents today; the kids will be 10x of us. It is onto to us whether we give them the right inputs to our children and make everyone’s life livable or create miserable citizens for the world!

 We can create Alex Sheen out of our kids or an Osama Bin Laden. The result will be in the choices we make today, backed by the right thinking!

 Remember – whatever you are, your kids will be 10x of you!
