India achieved a record-breaking installation of approximately 44.6 GW to 45 GW of solar power capacity in the financial year 2025-26 (FY26), according to reports from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) and analysts. This marks an over 87% increase compared to the previous year.
Key Facts Around the Record Increase
• Total Capacity: With this addition, India’s total cumulative solar capacity has crossed the 150 GW mark.
• Monthly Record: In March 2026 alone, the country installed 6.65 GW, the highest-ever capacity addition in a single month.
• Leading States: The growth was primarily driven by massive projects in Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Maharashtra.
• Market Dynamics: This surge is attributed to strong government policy support (like the ALMM policy and reduced taxes), large-scale utility projects, and accelerated manufacturing, as highlighted by [SBICAPS and other analysts].
• Growth Trend: The installation nearly doubled compared to the 2024-25 fiscal year, reinforcing India’s position as one of the fastest-growing clean energy markets.
This massive expansion helps accelerate India’s goal of reaching its renewable energy targets and reducing reliance on traditional power sources.
In a separate social media post, Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi said that this achievement reflects India’s unwavering commitment to energy security, sustainable development, and the vision of a Viksit Bharat. He noted that Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Maharashtra led this growth, driving the transition towards a cleaner and more self-reliant future
