Harshad’s Timely Call

In 2007, my son Archis was thrilled to get admission into the Institute of Hotel Management (IHM), Bangalore. It was a proud and promising moment for our family, and while the admission process went smoothly, what came next was an unexpected challenge—finding him a decent place to stay.

We began our search for a PG (paying guest) accommodation in and around Malleshwaram. The college gave us a few leads, and I scoured local newspaper ads. Archis and I spent hours walking through narrow lanes, climbing steep staircases, inspecting one room after another.

And what did we find? Cramped, dingy spaces with no sunlight, poor ventilation, and owners who seemed to think they were offering five-star suites. Most rooms were dark, barely maintained, and had a strange, musty smell. As a mother, my heart sank. This was to be his first time living away from home, and I couldn’t bear the thought of him staying in such conditions.

Archis, to his credit, remained calm and open-minded. “I can manage, Mom,” he’d say. “Don’t worry.” But I did worry. A lot. That evening, we stood outside yet another disappointing house, tired and unsure of what to do next. I remember looking at him, wondering if we had made a mistake choosing Bangalore. We had only two days on hand; his college classes would begin.

At that moment, the phone rang.

It was Harshad, one of my former students. His voice was familiar and warm. “Miss,” he said, “Hemant told me Archis got a seat in IHM Bangalore. Congratulations! Did you find accommodation yet?”

“No, not yet,” I replied, weary and frustrated. “I don’t like what I’ve seen so far.”

Harshad probably anticipated this trouble, and without hesitation, said: “Miss, I also studied at IHM Bangalore. Take him to Gandi Sir in RT Nagar. His house is near the bus stop, and the daily commute will be easy. He’s a former professor at IHM and a strict one—he may shout, but don’t mind it. He’ll even help Archis with accounts and other subjects. Let Archis stay there for a few months, form a group with the other boys in the flat, and then they can find a better place together.”

It was the perfect solution.

In that moment, Harshad didn’t just offer help—he offered clarity, direction, and a sense of relief that I so badly needed. His advice was practical, honest, and grounded in experience. I could see the road ahead again.

Thanks to Harshad’s timely call, we met Gandi Sir, and things fell into place just as he had predicted. Archis adjusted, made friends, and transitioned smoothly into his new life.

Why This Stays With Me

What stands out most about this memory is not just the help, but the timing of it. Harshad’s call came just when I felt most helpless. It reminded me that sometimes, the people we teach and nurture return the favor years later, in the most unexpected yet meaningful ways.

Harshad’s thoughtful gesture stayed with me—not just as a former student who remembered his teacher, but as a kind human being who chose to reach out.

  1. Good experience. I feel that in our lives we help people around us knowingly and sometimes unknowingly, all the goodwill done comes back to us when we are in need for help ourselves. Maybe this is how things work, so keep doing good for others you will surely be rewarded in the most unexpected ways and also during your hour of need.

  4. It is in moments of profound uncertainty that a beautiful synchronicity can occur, reminding us to trust the unseen forces at work.
Often, the answers we seek evade us during our focused frantic struggle, but evolve after our quiet acceptance of the situation opens our minds to every other possibility.
