DO EVERYTHING IN LIFE?

I did my Masters of International Business from Monash University, Australia in the year 2003-2004. I did. It was my first time ever time out of the comfort of my home and my loved ones. But the eagerness of going abroad over rode any anxious and nervy thoughts.

After a few angst-ridden days, we settled down. The orientation is usually not too hectic, and more about just getting used to the university space. We had a good 10-12 days time between the orientation and the start of the term. Which meant we had ample time to explore the city!

There were a few seniors to recommend us what all to do and see. One of the suggestions that came was – you must go to a strip club. He said it was all worth the excitement and fun. When we told him about our reluctance, he said that it was something absolutely normal in that country. His master statement was – “You should DO EVERYTHING IN LIFE!”

Thinking loud, it seems there are some more things, which are supposed to be done regularly for fun –

  • Have a hard drink
  • Smoke a cigarette
  • Try drugs when life seems tough
  • Break traffic rules when in hurry
  • Date people of opposite gender without being serious about it
  • Bunk important lectures
  • Get angry for smallest of reason
  • Lie to loved ones
  • Get others to do assignments for you
  • Bully weak people around you
  • Report late at work and give convincing reasons for it

If the above are a must do, how about these for fun –

  • Be the class topper when in college
  • Earn a gold medal in sports
  • Design a meme that goes viral
  • Win employee of the year award
  • Become the top businessman in your field that year
  • Be the most creative person in the organisation with ground breaking ideas
  • Invest quality time with your kids without gadgets
  • Book business class flight tickets for your family
  • Initiate a social movement with your school friends
  • Become the first person on the dance floor
  • Do ‘seva’ (selfless service) without an intention of personal gain
  • Respect the thoughts and feelings of your spouse, even if you don’t agree
  • Take your parents for a pilgrimage
  • Exercise 5 days a week for a month
  • Do something consistently for a year

In saying that we have become modern, we adopt lot of western philosophies and practices. There is nothing wrong in that. But the problem is – we adopt things that are convenient and forget about those which are important and transformational. Eg: we seem to have adopted social drinking as new phenomenon from the western world, but conveniently ignored being punctual and professional like the western world

For me, the understanding is simple – anything that makes us become better as a human being (be it professional, relationship or personal life), should be done over and over again; whereas that which is for sheer pleasure (mental, emotional or physical) should be the last thing to do.

Most of my readers would read this, appreciate it and forget about it very soon. Well, that’s what most of the regular people would do. But I write and put down my thoughts for those 1% people who comprehend, and look for ways to implement what they read and agree to.

To those 1% people – LET’S DO EVERYTHING IN LIFE, WHICH WILL ELEVATE US!

  1. Ammu this happens with everyone in lifetime…..and each one has to face all positive and negative aspects. You are lucky that you are from SANSKARI (kotharis) family.

    1. I can’t agree more! We have to accept and handle the situations as and when they come!
As far as being born in a SANKSARI family is concerned, that’s God’s grace! But to live up to that luck is my responsibility 🙂

  2. Wonderful blog Amit… It’s time we all pause and look back at our roots.. they tell us so many things which at times may not be as flashy and attractive as the western world. But surely they are more than the glamour rich world.

    1. I agree cent percent Prajakta!
I believe that the new India will help us get our roots back!
That’s what we must mould our kids towards! 🙂

  3. Dear Amit…
You really have a point. When speaking to youngsters, this looks cool. But the way you have explained will help me to reciprocate with them in much better way…also felt nice that their are few things I am consistant about ….

    1. Thanks Vikas ….
The beauty about you is growing and becoming better whenever you see the opportunity!
      You are Mr. Consistent! 🙂

  4. Its the core that matters in difficult situations….
somehow the world thinks good doers are extra smart people…attempting to be positive, value based all the time…
Its a way to face ur shortcomings….and improving and being strong…rather than hiding behind fads.

    1. That’s true!
What the world perceives is beyond our control. So, better to be strong at the core and do what we think is right. Eventually things and people will fall in place!

  5. Convincing!
As said … if you are interested you do things when it’s convenient for you and if committed you do whatever it takes for.
Will try to be committed to the above elevated thoughts for the transformation.
    Good one Amitji!

    1. Thanks for the appreciation Sunita Ji …
The intent is where it all starts …. I am glad the blog made a difference!

  6. I wish my sons read this blog!
As a parent sometimes I feel guilty for not exposing them enough to our culture where giving and sharing is such a big part.
These are values to live by.
I really liked what you’ve written.

    1. You can get them to read now 😉
Every culture has some unique things and every family has something to give the kids. I am sure you would have given them good values! As a parent, we can never stop giving. Just the way changes!
      Thanks for the appreciation! 🙂
