Last week Arpita and Me watched this movie named – MAHARAJ, which is streaming on Netflix!
Maharaj is a 2024 Indian Hindi-language historical drama film directed by Siddharth P. Malhotra and produced by YRF Entertainment. It stars Junaid Khan in his film debut with Jaideep Ahlawat, Shalini Pandey and Sharvari (billed as special appearance). The film is based on the Maharaj Libel Case of 1862 and Saurabh Shah’s novel about the case. (Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maharaj_(film))
The Maharaj Libel Case was an 1862 trial in the Bombay High Court in the Bombay Presidency, British India. The case was filed by Jadunathjee Brajratanjee Maharaj, against Nanabhai Rustomji Ranina and Karsandas Mulji. The case was filed because of an editorial article which they published accused the Vallabhacharya and Pushtimarg Sect. This case highlighted conflicts between traditional yet controversial social practices such as charan seva and emerging reformist ideas in colonial India, garnering significant public attention and praise for Mulji’s efforts. Until we saw this movie, we were never aware about such a practice. We were shocked that such things did happen and were considered a custom.
As is the norm after seeing a historic movie, we immediately Googled for knowing more about the incident. Arpita looked up more on Karsandas Mulji, the main character in the Maharaj series. Apart from few things, the thing that caught her attention was that – Karsandas only lived for 39 years. He was born in 1832 and passed away in 1871.
I instantly commented, “Maybe his purpose to come on Earth was to do away with this system of ‘Charan-seva.’ He did his work and departed. He achieved a major milestone even in 39 years. Swami Vivekananda too passed away when he was 39 years old. But until then he had already spread Vedanta Philosophy and religion to the West. So, more than the age, it is about the contribution to the world!”
Though our conversation ended there, the mind kept wandering …..
The entire Existence functions meticulously. There are millions of things happening around us every second, without we even knowing. So many things happen, which we can’t even justify and conclude. Everything seems a wonder!
The Existence/ Force/ Almighty or anything you might term it, already has plans for you and through you. As a human being, we are too small to even understand who we are, what we are and why we are! Yet, each one of us are a part of larger scheme of things!
The beauty is – none of us really know what are we here for. We can only speculate. Some people say that they have found the purpose of their lives, but can we ever be sure? A purpose needn’t really be about a social reform, or an innovation, etc.
It can something extremely simple too, like – two people getting married because of you; you and your spouse producing an offspring who might do something for humanity; you driving your business, which creates an industry 100 years later and generates thousands of jobs; you uttering a sentence, which unknowingly gets someone out of depression; accidently you drop a chemical over another, which causes reaction and forms an extremely important formulation; your profession takes you to place, where you end up helping a social cause; and so much more …… Who knows – smallest of act can lead to a huge thing in future!
It is futile to question our existence and role on this planet. None of us should think ill about ourselves. Each one of us has something special within. The very fact that we are born as human beings, is exceptional in itself.
Our job really is to keep doing best in every role we are playing – as a parent, child, student, teacher, employer, employee, sportsperson, relative, friend, professional, well-wisher or anyone else.
None of us know what are we here for. But the fact that we are here, we should make it count! Let us live up to human potential and do the best we can!

Beautifully conceptualised Amit!
Thank You Ji 🙂
Well written. 👌
To quote you – “the fact that we are here, we should make it count!”
Yes!! This is how each one of us should think about life.
Thank You Teacher!
If most of us can live like this, wouldn’t the world be a beautiful place?
