DATED – 13th October 2015
It’s been almost two years (or maybe a little more) that we have been having staff meeting at my office. We do this meeting once a month where each and every employee is supposed to attend compulsorily, right from the helpers to the top sales people. The idea being – to create a culture in the organization and ensure everyone is on similar ground. At the same time discuss and sort out any issues, and update each other. Apart from this, I share with them some insight on life, relationships, attitude etc.
This meeting, on 7th October 2015, towards the end, I showed them a video, which made me learn something beautiful, which I wish to share through this blog. The video showed multiple instances in day-to-day living, where without asking for help, people help each other. Eg: papers fly out of a man’s bag, and a lady helps him collect them; a man standing ahead of a lady with a baby in hand, allows her to go ahead; a woman opens door for a blind lady to walk through; and so on.
Here are a few things, which I think all of us can do, without people asking and we losing nothing at all. They might look small things, but I am sure it will make a big difference to others, and most importantly to us, the way we look at ourselves –
- Helping someone cross the road
- Park a car for someone who can’t do parallel parking
- Put mud on road where there is an oil spill to ensure no one else slips
- Giving a lift to someone
- Just asking the liftman/ watchman – How are you?
- Get up and allow an elderly person to take your seat in bus/ local train
- Asking your employee to take an off when you can see their health is not okay
- Sharing food with your co-passenger who hasn’t got anything to eat
- Handing over a few extra bucks to the waiter who served you so well
- Helping a foreigner who has come in our country, but looks a little confused
- Offering to click a photo for a group, where selfie is not being possible
- If one of your friend has taken up a major responsibility, help as much as you can
- Making tea/ coffee for your wife
- and many more that you can think of …….
In all the situations that I am talking about, people will not directly ask for help. It is we who has to be aware of the surroundings. Without hesitating, we must help. I know the intention is always there. But, we overlook the situation. Think – haven’t there been times, where you know someone needs help, but just walking past, as if we didn’t see it.
Vis-a-vis my life –
When I think about it, there have been quite a few times where I have CHOSEN TO IGNORE that which I can see, trying to fool myself. Not that I have never helped, but I have ignored too. Feel ashamed to share this, but share I must. Hence I feel that the video has been a brilliant one for me.
My appeal to you is let’s be a little more aware. Watch around! Not everyone is capable of asking for help. Some people don’t even know that they actually need help. But that’s where the human being within us must rise. When we do something for someone, without they asking for it, we rise in our own eyes. That feeling makes us feel truly ecstatic. It might look very small, but it can make a huge difference to someone and us too. Hence I really believe – small things; but BIG DIFFERENCE!
