It was an ordinary, scorching summer day, the kind where the sun scorches the ground and even the wind feels hot. Outside my bungalow, a group of labourers had been working tirelessly, loading and unloading bricks from a truck. Among them was a short, strong-built man who caught my attention. This story is about him, and it’s one I will never forget.
I have a simple habit. Whether it’s the vegetable vendor, the rickshaw driver, or any stranger who happens to come by, if it’s a hot day, I offer them water. That day was no different. I told the labourers, “If you need water, just ring the bell.” And throughout the day, I brought them cold water two or three times as they worked under the blazing sun.
I watched from a distance as they toiled, sweat pouring down their faces, their clothes soaked, their energy slowly drained. Still, they worked steadily and without complaint.
When their work was done and the truck finally drove off, I thought the day had come to an end. But a few minutes later, my doorbell rang. I opened the door to find the same labourer standing there. He didn’t speak Hindi or English, but through his gestures, I could see that he wanted to step into the garden area. I nodded and opened the gate.
What he did next left me speechless. He walked in quietly, then knelt right in front of me and offered me a chocolate bar. Just a simple chocolate — but he offered it, so humbly and gratefully, that it made it feel like the most precious gift I’d ever received.
I was stunned. I said, “Why are you giving this to me? I can’t take this.”
He shook his head and, in broken words and more gestures, said something I’ll never forget: “You gave us water the whole day. Please accept this. It’s a small thank you.”
In that moment, my eyes filled with tears. I’ve offered water to many people over the years — some thank me, some don’t — but no one has ever done something like this in return. That tiny bar of chocolate meant the world to me because of the feeling behind it.
He wouldn’t leave until I accepted it. So, I took the chocolate, smiled, and said “Thank you.” He replied, “Thank you very much,” and walked away.
I never saw him again. But his gesture, that moment — it stayed with me. It reminded me that kindness, no matter how small, always comes back in some form. And sometimes, it touches your heart in ways you never expect.
