Samjhauta - which type would you choose?

Loading

While reading a book in written in beautifully composed Hindi language, I chanced upon this word – Samjhauta.

In the short story that I was reading it had the relevant and contextual meaning.

What got me thinking was that there exists another possibility of what the word can mean and how that changes the entire story or situation.

Let’s look at it together.

Samjhauta – in English language would translate as agreement or compromise.

Two sentences in Hindi to showcase the two versions.

  1. Meera ne apni zindagi ke sath samjhauta kar liya. Agley din woh apne pati ke ghar chali gayi.
  2. Meera aur uske pati ki dinbhar khoob ladai hui, phir shaam tak jab mamla kuch sambhla, tab ja kar dono me samjhauta hua.

In the 1st version, the meaning and connotation is that of a compromise, or an agreement which you get into knowing that you have lost or will lose eventually. There is a sense of defeat, sadness associated with this.

In the 2nd instance, there is an agreement, where both parties say what they want and what the give and take will be. It is a win-win situation. There is joy, triumph and relief in this.

Whenever we agree to something, it will be worth noticing what kind of samjhauta it is – agreement or compromise.

We might even observe some patterns of our behavior with this especially with respect to some people.

Let us check ourselves, invest this time with us and hopefully we will move to the correct, more fulfilling, powerful and empowering version of Samjhauta.
