One-upmanship

Loading

So, my husband bought himself a motorbike.

His joy while taking its key was unbridled and childlike.

The 650cc machine weighs about 200 kilos

Its twin cylinders fire legendarily in echoes.

Despite the bulk it rides smooth like butter –

A calculated purchase that sets his soul aflutter!

With its powerful engine on display

Adjectives flow as per default wordplay…

‘Tamed the beast’ – many proclaim.

‘Brought a monster home’ – with pride they exclaim.

My mind, too, was hit at such words’ crossroad

‘Steer away now,’ my heart forebode…

The bike – a (prized) mode of transport,

I see it as my husband’s strong support.

Why call it names of a negative light?

It paints us with a smirk, flexing our might.

‘I own you’ is the vibe we thus wear

The monster awaits its moment to flare.

A slight skid is all it’ll take for it to roar

The game of one-upmanship will leave both with a sore…

Why boast when we can respectfully coexist?

Do not undermine the other, I desperately insist.

Money doesn’t hand you the right over an employee.

Why give a piece of your mind to someone weary?

How often we see children ridiculed by an adult;

Some bully and call a regional language an insult.

Often humans partake in a race to be better –

‘Better than the other’ seems to make them the go-getter.

Instead of weighing myself against others around,

Focussing inwards to compete is a trick renowned!

Unless playing a video-game we shan’t want a one-up.

Let’s promise a healthy habit instead we’ll develop…!
