Oil Pulling

Oil pulling is an ancient ayurvedic technique practised as the first activity in the morning said to have innumerable benefits. Well yes i do agree. I have been practising since long now, though with consistent breaks thanks to my hormonal moods. And I do feel good about the practise. When my third bottle of organic coconut oil arrived last evening, my husband demonstrated interest in learning the technique too. Yeah this guy has suddenly taken healthcare seriously .

The first thing in the morning before brushing, I fill my mouth with 1 spoon of coconut oil. Then squish it around for a while. With practise I am able to keep it in for a good 8 minutes now. It is ok to begin with a minute . You can take it up to 15 minutes with practise.

While squishing the oil in my mouth from side to side, this way and that,I mentally say my morning health affirmations, I physically tidy my bed , then water my plants and ta-da it is almost 7 to 8 minutes of oil pulling. Whoosh ! That is some multitasking right ?

Then I flush it away , careful not to spit it out in the basin as it may clog the sink. Follow by warm water gargle and regular brushing of my teeth .

This first ritual is said to detox the body by pulling out toxins with help of activated salivary glands . I have not studied medicine or ayurveda , but have read about it and when Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty promoted it, I got interested .

How often do we think about detoxing our mind that is our thoughts like the body ? Can we consciously replace one unpleasant thought with a positive nourishing one say like a thankful thought or a forgiving thought?

I take this opportunity and replace my anxiety with gratitude :

“I am deeply grateful for this amazing body . Every cell of my body is glowing with perfect vibrant health. “
