Ever since I listened to Nazia’s songs, she has taken full charge of my mind. There is no other favourite singer of mine than her. Her voice is captivating and mesmerising. It is unbelievable to learn that now she is not with us here on this planet. My heart aches because of this irreparable and irreversible fact. But, as a matter of fact I wouldn’t have travelled to Pakistan to see her if luckily she would have been there. Nor I would have gone to see her at some place in India if she had been on tour to India. I try to console my mind with this explanation which is but a fact. Now I listen to her songs. I would have listened to her songs otherwise, if she had still existed. The connection could have been sought only through her recorded voice and my listening to that and not by means of seeing her personally. One has to accept such truth when one is born on the earth as an ordinary man. That is the only possibility in the present capacity of my realisation. I have not yet gone that much ahead in the realisation where the souls and the universe are embedded in one all pervading single entity! I am not realised so I don’t know though I believe in this.
So, for Nazia, I listen to some of her songs again and again. I try to sing with karaoke using microphone and speaker. Her unique, medically recognised sharp nasal voice can’t be replicated. Once as I was introduced to Nazia, she took complete charge of my mind. And the whole internet got obliged to take me to every place where she sang, gave interviews and anchored TV shows.
I was introduced to Nazia in an interview in Tabassum’s TV show. Shy and humble Nazia was answering Tabassum’s questions regarding Nazia’s Filmfare award winning song “Aap Jaisa Koi” from Feroz Khan’s Qurbani in 1982. And there onwards I was driven on the journey through many of Nazia’s songs, videos and interviews. I delved deeper and deeper in Nazia’s persona. Brilliant sides of her personality kept on emerging in front me every time I watched her performing or speaking. Her angelic and royal mannerisms, dignified behaviour mesmerised me.
This Queen of Pop Singing was not only a prolific singer but she was a business lawyer, philanthropist and a gold medalist scholar who topped in her London based college. At very young age she reached the pinnacle of career in pop singing and became a famous celebrity. The most extra ordinary thing about her personality was her sense of social responsibility. She used her abilities for social cause especially for children, youth and women in distress. It was Nazia who established the organisation BAN ( Battle Against Narcotics) to save the vulnerable youth from the use of dangerous intoxicants.
This is quite remarkable when we learn about today’s so called glamorous show biz people involved in consumption and trade of these substances. As an extended service to society, Nazia joined United Nation’s Security Council at New York and also offered services to UNICEF for helping children. She was later appointed as the Goodwill Ambassador for Children’s Rights by the United Nations Children’s Education Fund (UNICEF).
Nazia, The Queen of Pop, an artist with heart of gold can’t be forgotten. Her songs are still popular worldwide and getting constant views even today. Recently, Nazia Hassan lit up Spotify’s digital billboard at the iconic Times Square, New York City, as EQUAL Ambassador of the month. Nazia, has won an eternal place in the universal heart and so she resides in the heart of every admirer of hers. Nazia, can’t be forgotten.
