Yati Gaur’s Inspiring Journey of Discovering India’s Diversity, One Step at a Time

In a remarkable journey of self-discovery and exploration, 26-year-old Yati Gaur, hailing from Noida, Uttar Pradesh, is embarking on a unique adventure to uncover every corner of his beloved country, India, on foot. Accompanied by his faithful rescue dog, Buttercup, Yati’s mission is simple – to connect with the people and places that make up the diverse tapestry of India.

Yati’s journey into the world of travel wasn’t always a part of his life plan. Initially drawn to art and the dream of filmmaking, fate had other ideas for him. However, a pivotal moment in his life came when he started working at Hostellers, a backpackers hostel chain in Noida. Surrounded by fellow travelers, he discovered the joy of exploration and decided to pursue his passion for travel.

His journey on foot began in September 2020, shortly after the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic subsided. Although he started alone, fate intervened again when he found Buttercup, a rescue puppy who would become his unwavering companion and friend.

Since then, Yati and Buttercup have traversed more than 5,000 kilometers, covering diverse regions of India. Their sixth expedition, the Chardham yatra, recently took them to Andhra Pradesh, where Yati shared insights into their ambitious journey, its highs, lows, and the unique experience of traveling through India on foot.

Yati’s second expedition took him through Rajasthan, covering approximately 880 kilometers. It was during this journey that he encountered Buttercup in a Jaipur village. This young pup became an inseparable part of his adventure, and Yati carried her in his arms for 60 kilometers until he found a tailor who crafted a carry bag for her.

A heartwarming incident in Uttar Pradesh demonstrated the empathy animals like Buttercup possess. Exhausted from walking, Yati inadvertently missed an injured cow by the roadside. However, Buttercup noticed the distressed cow and persistently tugged at Yati’s feet until he investigated. His call for help led to the rescue of the injured cow, revealing the selflessness of animals in times of distress.

Yati’s journey from being a cinematography graduate to a full-time traveler was a transformative one. His decision to work at Hostellers changed the course of his life, making him realize the beauty and richness of India’s culture and landscapes. After expressing his desire to travel India to his father, who fully supported his dream, Yati set out on his unique journey.

One of the most challenging concepts for his friends and family to grasp was his decision to travel on foot. Yati explained that walking allowed him to intimately experience the journey and the diverse landscapes of India, rather than simply reaching the destination.

Yati’s first-ever walking expedition took him from Rishikesh to Kedarnath, covering over 216 kilometers. His third expedition, through Himachal Pradesh, was cut short due to an injury. Yati also explored northeast India, particularly Sikkim, in his fourth expedition, but Buttercup couldn’t join him as she was still a puppy.

After training Buttercup, Yati embarked on his fifth expedition, marking the beginning of their inseparable journey. He praises Buttercup as the ideal travel companion, describing her as smart and resilient. She motivates him to keep going even when he feels like giving up.

Their current journey takes them from Uttarakhand to Kerala, covering India’s four holy sites: Badrinath, Dwarka, Jagannath Puri, and Rameswaram. Yati is excited about the cultural diversity in the southern part of the country and is looking forward to experiencing it with Buttercup. The Chardham expedition is expected to take another 10 months to complete.

Despite encountering language barriers and other challenges, Yati has found the people of India to be overwhelmingly kind and helpful. His only challenge lies in finding pet-friendly accommodations at times.

Technology, particularly Google Maps, is Yati’s trusty companion on his expeditions, though it can occasionally pose challenges. He emphasizes the importance of traveling light and minimizing gadget use to conserve battery life.

Reflecting on his journey, Yati stresses that his purpose in life is simply to live it to the fullest. He considers himself fortunate to be born in a country as diverse as India, and his only wish is to soak in its breathtaking beauty.

Despite initial skepticism from friends and family, Yati’s determination has driven him to achieve remarkable feats. He reached Kedarnath after eight days of walking, a moment of overwhelming pride and accomplishment. Yati has been documenting his incredible journey on Instagram, garnering a devoted following of over 53,000 people. He also receives sponsorship support from generous individuals and brands, ensuring that he and Buttercup can continue their extraordinary adventure.

In a world filled with diversity, Yati Gaur and Buttercup are on a mission to explore, one town at a time, showcasing the true essence of India’s rich culture and landscapes. Their journey is a testament to the beauty of discovering one’s own country, step by step, and the unbreakable bond between a traveler and his faithful canine companion.
