In a historic appointment, Sonali Ghosh has taken on the role of Field Director at Kaziranga National Park, commencing her duties on September 1, 2023. Sonali’s journey from a childhood filled with a deep love for animals to becoming the first woman to hold this position is a remarkable tale of dedication and passion.
Born in Pune in 1975, Sonali’s upbringing was marked by constant travels and exposure to diverse cultures, fostering her connection with nature. Her passion for biology blossomed during her undergraduate years, leading her to pursue a master’s degree in wildlife science at the Wildlife Institute of India in Dehradun. It was here that her commitment to wildlife conservation was ignited.
Sonali’s journey brought her to Kaziranga National Park almost two decades ago, where she began her career in conservation. Despite societal pressures for women to prioritize marriage over career, Sonali’s supportive family enabled her to pursue her dreams. In a male-dominated profession, she encountered challenges, including a lack of hygiene facilities for women, but her determination persevered.
As Field Director, Sonali’s responsibilities encompass wildlife monitoring, ecotourism management, and staff welfare. Her primary focus is on continuing the conservation efforts, particularly for rhinoceros and other flagship species.
Despite having assumed her new role only 20 days ago, Sonali is fully prepared for the responsibilities it entails. She expressed gratitude to the state government for the opportunity and looks forward to dedicating herself to the conservation of Kaziranga’s wildlife.
Sonali Ghosh’s journey is not just a personal achievement but also an inspiration for future generations of women aspiring to make a difference in the field of forest and wildlife conservation. She encourages all women and young ladies with a passion for the outdoors to overcome apprehensions and explore the limitless opportunities this field offers.
