Every human being has a conscience. That conscience is relative and varies from person to person. What is right for one person might not necessarily be so for the other and vice-versa. When a human being does things, which are progressive, I call it – POSITIVE CONSCIENCE; whereas any thoughts/ actions, which destroy or hurt someone are – NEGATIVE CONSCIENCE.
When it comes to business, can there ever be a POSITIVE CONSCIENCE? Or should it always be about making money, scaling margins and increasing volumes, anyhow and somehow? Here are some ideas on how to have a POSITIVE CONSCIENCE –
- Do not sell anything to a customer, which he/ she does not need. They might buy in good faith, and because they can afford. But not a positive conscience
- Sometimes a client will not know new products, services and technologies. You will be updated because you are doing what you are doing every single day. if you believe that buying something will add value to a client, do everything to sell it to them. They will bless you in future. That will lead to a positive conscience
- A customer is not a professional to understand calculations you give and hence the final amount. Be fair! Take only that you deserve. Do not overcharge in prices and quantities. Take what is rightfully yours and not over it. Incase of a mistake of receipt of an additional amount, be ready to refund without they asking for it
- Incase of a fault in your product or an error from your staff, gleefully accept that which is not right. Even if it means replacement or re-do. It might look like a loss right now, but will uplift your goodwill in the market
- Sell products, services and technologies which you/ your family don’t mind using yourself. If you are selling anything, from which you would like to keep your family away from, you can never have a positive conscience
There is no guarantee that doing business with a positive conscience is a recipe for success. I believe that every business will have its ups and downs in terms of sales and profits. Few years will be good, while few might not be so good. But what remains in our hands and can be consistent is – positive conscience.
Only a businessman with positive conscience can sleep peacefully after a days work. Maybe they did not reach to become one of the Fortune 500 companies, but they would have built a business they and their families will be proud of!
