Community Effort Turns Pali Hill Sustainable

Loading

In the 90s, eight women formed the Pali Hill Residents’ Association (PHRA) with a vision to transform their Mumbai neighborhood into a cleaner, greener, and safer place. Today, Pali Hill is a sustainable area with abundant greenery, clean roads, and round-the-clock security, thanks to the PHRA’s efforts.

The association worked tirelessly to create awareness about waste segregation and overcame initial resistance to implement door-to-door garbage collection. This led to a biogas plant that converts wet waste into energy, powering street lights and saving on electricity costs.

PHRA faced challenges in convincing people about their mission, but they managed to raise funds through contributions from residents. They involved both women and men, and today, the compliance level with contributions is high.

Security has also improved with high-definition cameras monitored by the police. Tree-cutting and unauthorized road digging are banned, and builders must meet certain conditions for redevelopment.

The association’s dedication has earned them accolades from various government bodies, and they continue their work despite the challenges posed by the pandemic.

Their future plans include setting up a larger biogas plant to convert wet waste to CNG, further contributing to the environment. The PHRA’s collaboration-based approach has been key to their success, gaining support from officials and the community.

The Pali Hill Residents’ Association is a shining example of how a united community can bring about positive change and make their neighborhood a better place to live.

Today Pali Hill in Bandra, Mumbai is a sustainable neighbourhood.
