The Positive Diary

A perspective change …

A few weeks ago, I was getting irritated on smallest of things. It was very unsual of me doing something like this. No one except Arpita could figure out that I was not behaving normal. I would justify saying – ‘look at the way people are driving; my staff isn’t working as efficiently as I would love them to; how can they talk with so much disrespect’; and so on …

In the seemingly mad world, there came another opportunity to listen to my favorite spiritual leader – Sri M! He was in Pune for an event and was about to address the public for 90 minutes. I couldn’t miss that opportunity, irrespective of what was happening around.

His focus of the session was Upanishads and it’s importance. He gave various examples in daily life to explain Upanishads in a simpler format. Sitting there in his session, something changed within. In that moment, I felt liberated and light. His words have always caused instant transformation in me. His sessions seem magical always.

Next day, I had a site visit, where unnecessary issues were being created by the architect. Without any fault of us, we were being fumed upon. Earlier I would keep calm and handle the situation. But now, it was beyond me to take unnecessary shit. So, I kept giving it back to them. The situation wasn’t pleasant for either of us. The very thought of that site caused irritation, which was very unusual. But we were trudging along as we wanted to complete the site and move on.

But today I seemed calmer. I heard my heart telling the mind – ‘Make them understand your perspective. Communicate with empathy. If you get angry, they will do the same. So relax and take it easy! Be your normal self!’

As I reached the site, and the client shook her head and said, “Are you the owner of Concrete Works?” I nodded in affirmation. She continued, “Amit, very disappointed.” I smiled and replied, “I understand your concern Mam. Let’s understand the issues and figure out a solution.” As we took a walk around the house, both of us realized that the issues were not as big, just that we needed to communicate properly. Instead of blaming each other, we needed to resolve.

After coming out of the site, I called architect to update. When I spoke to her calmly, she too spoke well. So much so that one wall which was causing the maximum issues, she admitted that there was a problem earlier too, which they tried not to reveal. I explained her about the client’s concern and the possible resolutions. She seemed satisfied with the way the situation was handled. We hung up on a positive note this time.

When I look back at the situation, nothing changed – same architects, same client, and constant me! What changed is the PERSPECTIVE! My way of looking at things, situation and people changed, and suddenly everything looked fine! My perspective of a plant changed from looking at THORNS to looking at the FLOWER.

Similarly, there are various situations in life where things look complicated or cause irritation and anger within. A change in perspective of the same situation will lead us to feeling calm, composed, peaceful and happy.

This can’t definitely be an overnight change! But start we must! It might take a few months or maybe a year to reach there. But the feeling is blissful! The best way to handle a tough situation is – A PERSPECTIVE CHANGE!
