RAGGING: A PERSISTENT MENACE IN EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTES

As the academic calendar draws to a close, a new session of professional courses is poised to commence in July. However, with admissions to esteemed institutions like medical colleges, IITs, and NITs comes a pressing concern – the pervasive menace of ragging. In anticipation of the challenges that incoming students will face, I felt compelled to delve into this critical issue and provide an in-depth exploration of the complexities surrounding ragging in educational institutions. Ragging: A Persistent Menace in Educational Institutes Ragging, a practice disguised as a harmless initiation ritual, has plagued educational institutions in India for generations. Despite stringent laws and awareness campaigns, this cruel tradition continues to claim lives, inflict psychological trauma, and destroy careers. What begins as a form of interaction between seniors and juniors often escalates into physical abuse, mental harassment, and even death. Despite knowing its devastating consequences, society has failed to eradicate this deep-rooted evil. The Ugly Reality of Ragging Ragging, in its mildest form, involves teasing and light-hearted tasks. However, in many cases, it turns violent, with seniors forcing juniors to perform humiliating, dangerous, or illegal acts. Physical assault, verbal abuse, sexual harassment, and psychological torture are common. Many victims suffer from depression, anxiety, and even suicidal tendencies. Tragically, some students have lost their lives due to extreme ragging, leaving families shattered. Why Does Ragging Persist? Despite strict laws like the UGC (University Grants Commission) regulations and Supreme Court interventions, ragging continues. Several factors contribute to its persistence: The Consequences of Ragging The effects of ragging are far-reaching: Mental Health Crisis – Many victims develop PTSD, depression, and drop out of college, ruining their academic futures. Erosion of Trust – Ragging creates a hostile environment, destroying the mentor-mentee relationship that should exist between seniors and juniors. How Can We Eradicate Ragging? First Hand Experience When my daughter secured her MBBS seat, her classmates threw her a farewell party. However, upon returning home, she seemed subdued. We asked if the party was enjoyable, but she shared her concerns about ragging in medical college, which had been discussed at the party. Her excitement had given way to apprehension about the challenges ahead. We reassured her that ragging is a rite of passage in many professional colleges, and that every year, new students navigate similar situations. We reminded her that after an initial period, things usually settle down. Fortunately, her experience was relatively smooth. The ragging was limited to light-hearted activities like singing, dancing, and playful mimicry. While boys may face tougher situations, our daughter found the girls to be friendly and welcoming. To any student heading to a professional institution, I’d like to say that while ragging may seem daunting, it’s often a temporary phase. Focus on building positive relationships with your peers, and remember that your institution is committed to providing a supportive environment. You’ll find that the initial anxiety gives way to lasting friendships and a rewarding educational experience. Looking at some impactful cases on ragging, “As I reflect on the past, a poignant memory from a decade ago still resonates deeply within me. He spoke of the financial burdens, the career setbacks, and the looming court cases that threatened to drag on for years. But what struck me most was his candor and humility. He made no demands, a rare quality in our community, and instead, poured his heart out, seeking acceptance and understanding. In that moment, I was moved by his vulnerability and the desperation of a father willing to do anything for his child’s happiness. His words still echo within me: ‘I just want my son to find peace and love; the court cases will eventually subside, but a lifetime of happiness is what I crave for him.’ As I looked into his eyes, I saw a father’s unwavering love, and my heart went out to him.” I discussed the matter with my daughter, she straight away refused to go ahead. Case 2 Aman Kachru Medical student death during RAGGING Aman Kachru, a young medical student from Himachal Pradesh, fell victim to a brutal ragging incident. A seemingly harmless slap on the ear triggered a catastrophic reaction, causing blood to gush out of his ear. Tragically, Aman succumbed to his injuries the very next day. His father, driven by grief and a sense of justice, resigned from his service to take on the system. He founded an NGO, determined to eradicate ragging and ensure that no other family suffers the same fate. Through his tireless efforts, he aims to create a safer, more compassionate environment for students, and to keep his son’s memory alive by fighting against this social menace.
